Fielding the same side and formation that beat Mansfield Town the previous week, Altrincham came close to their first ever away win against ex-League side, Rushden and Diamonds, on Monday night.

The visitors withstood a short period of pressure from the big-spending Northamptonshire side, before taking the lead a minute before the interval.

Altrincham manager Graham Heathcote had again gone for a fluid formation in which the wide men, Lee Elam and Shaun Densmore broke forward with pace and it was Elam who laid on the goal.

From Greg Young’s fine tackle, the ball was worked to the left-winger who got to the by-line before laying the ball into the path of Colin Little.

Making his 200th Altrincham appearance, Little drove a rasping shot into the roof of the net from just inside the penalty area.

The lead was held until the 77th minute when a corner was nodded down to Leon Knight who poked the ball home from close range.

But Alty were good value for their point, which extends their unbeaten run in all competitions to four games and keeps them out of the relegation zone.

They entertain sixth-placed Kent side Ebbsfleet United, at Moss Lane, this Saturday (4th) at 3pm, before travelling to Salisbury City next Tuesday.
