Kids have a ball at junior tennis tournament

FIFTY-six tennis players turned out for a one-day junior round robin doubles tournament held at Bowdon Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday.

Play began on the artificial grass courts, but switched to grass after mid-day when the dew dried out.

Lauren Hepburn and Chloe Chan of Hale Barns tennis club won the Under-15s girls competition.

Runners-up were Lucy Hyde and Grace Breen from host club Bowdon.

Bowdon pair Tom Warren and Miles Safiruddin won the Under-12 boys category, with Michael Leatherbarrow and James Ruddock, of Alderley Edge, finishing second.

The Myra Nevett Trophy, competed for by the Under-18s boys, was won by John Abbott and Adam Tomlinson of Greave and Davenport tennis clubs. Runners-up were Mellor pair Marcus McNulty and James Russell.

James Donnelly and Ross Mackenzie, from Northern tennis club, won the Under-15s boys competition. Didsbury pair Martin Benson-May and Robert Benson-May were runners-up.

In the Under-12 girls section Manon Steyaert and Megan Johns from Alderley Edge triumphed. The runners-up were Northern pairing Rona Mackenzie and Eilidh Gawley.

The final event in the Slazenger Junior North East Cheshire Lawn Tennis League one-day tournaments programme is at Bramhall Lane Lawn Tennis Club on Sunday, October 12.

The event will start at 12.30pm.
