First win at Moss Lane

ALTRINCHAM secured their first home win of the season with a late winner against bottom of the table Lewes, from East Sussex.

The goal, Altrincham’s first in almost nine hours of football, came from substitute Greg Young.

The tall centre-half was sent on up front as a late replacement, after Alty had laboured for 87 minutes to make their superiority tell.

The winner came after Warren Peyton fired in his third long-range shot in as many minutes.

‘Keeper Banks who otherwise played well, fumbled, allowing Young to pounce.

The team were suffering a collective lack of confidence after their poor run of results, and the supporters were growing restless, but this win may help the team live up to its capabilities as the season progresses.

Debutant right-back Shaun Densmore looked a useful addition to the side, but it was the experienced Lee Elam who was named man of the match for his willingness to take the game to Lewes, especially in the first half.

Then, on Tuesday night, the Robins beat Mansfield 1-0 at Moss Lane. Chris Senior scored the only goal within seconds of the kick-off.

Alty travel to Rushden and Diamonds on Monday (29th) for their next Blue Square Premier match, which will be televised on Setanta Sports.

- A charity football match, featuring celebrities and sports stars, is taking place at Moss Lane this Sunday (28th) at 2pm.

The match is between a Darren Gough XI and an All Stars team featuring stars of Coronation Street and Hollyoaks.

Entry costs £5 for adults and £2 for children. A family ticket, for two adults and two children, costs £10.

Proceeds from the match will go towards for the McGrath Foundation, a cancer charity named after cricketer Glenn McGrath’s late wife Jane.

Cricketer Darren Gough’s side is expected to include a host of well known names, including former Manchester United and England hero Bryan Robson.

Everyone welcome.
