FORMER Ringway Golf Club junior star James Salt has seen his golfing career take a new direction after becoming the assistant professional at Ashton-under-Lyne Golf Club.
James, who has played golf around the world, says he is looking forward to working with Ashton pro Colin Boyle, who has a great track record of developing PGA trainee pros.
James, 27, began his golf as a junior at Ringway and played regularly for Cheshire.
He then enjoyed four years in the United States on a golf scholarship, studying at Oregon State and Oklahoma Universities for two years each.
He played on both universities’ teams, both of which were ranked number one in the national college rankings when he played for them.
James also served some time as an assistant at Nefyn and District GC in North Wales and as a tour pro with Doha Golf Club, Qatar.
Now he is looking to complete his PGA qualification at Ashton after playing on the European Challenge Tour, Europro Tour, the Tamsel Tour and PGA events.
At Ashton he will still be looking to play whenever possible in Manchester Alliance competitions, the Tamsel and Players Tours as well as PGA pro ams. James said: "I am looking forward to playing on the Ashton course, which comes highly recommended, and I am also looking for sponsorship to help defray some playing expenses.
"Anyone who thinks that they can help can contact me on 07515 447 653."
Sale’s men played a Captain’s qualifier and Trevor Tait left scorch marks on the course after posting a winning nett 63.
Also in bright form were Anthony Lowe 65, Jagdish Ranshi 65 and Dermott McCarroll 67 with Kevin Peter Moore having the best gross of 71.
Sale’s Lady Captain, Carol Broadbent, was in charge of an LGU medal with her winning score of 67 seeing her handicap reduced by four shots.
Jackie Caw was next in with 71 and Sada Kilby completed the prize list with 74.
The mother and daughter duo of Brig Elmore and Cath Rawthore will represent Sale in the Daily Mail Foursomes next year after winning the club qualifier with 73, three shots ahead of Hilary Tarleton and Julie Matthews.
Ashton-on-Mersey’s men played the fourth round of the Lawson Cup and N Greenhalgh cruised to victory with a neat 69 from C Brownhill 70. In the Mersey Gents’ Invitation Day C Oldham and his guest N Thomas were the main men with 40, a shot clear of D Hess and J Parkinson.
Mersey ladies played a Stableford for the President’s final and J Jones was first across the line from junior star Gemma Clews and L Ford.
Dunham Forest’s men played for the Stern Cup in a singles Stableford and G Levers was an emphatic winner with 40 points, four clear of S Lentin and J Tuck with R Bookbinder, K Cooklin, C Feldman, P Stedman and J Santhouse all on 35 points.
Simon Marsh, the much-respected PGA Professional at Heaton Moor Golf Club, is looking for an enthusiastic golfer to be his assistant professional.
Simon said: "There will be plenty of time for the candidates to improve their golf and this is a good opportunity for someone who is looking to make golf their living.
"Punctuality is essential and a knowledge of golf club etiquette would help.
"Interested parties should telephone me on 0161 432 0846, extension 2.
