Hole in one success

27/ 6/2008

HOLES-in-one are always worthy of celebration but a local lady achieved her latest aces in spectacular fashion.

Ann Kerr of Davyhulme Park Golf Club had her first-ever ace at her own club a number of years ago and her big regret was that she didn’t actually see it go into the hole on the par three 120-yard 17th hole.

Ann said: "I was a relative beginner at the game and, with the hole being well protected at the front by a pond and bunkers, my only aim was to get the ball to the back of the green.

"I hit a three-wood to ensure that it did this and was delighted when it hit the flagstick full on and then disappeared.

"After a long search around the green we eventually discovered that it had gone into the hole to everyone’s delight.

"The latest one came during a club four-ball match-play round with Jenny Page as my partner.

"We went into the 17th hole leading by two shots and Jenny said to me to make sure again that my ball landed on the green to finish the match off so that we could get to the club barbeque night that was going on at the time.

"This time with my handicap now down to 17 I was able to hit a seven-iron and having hit it well and seeing that it was bound for the green I bent down to pick my tee-peg up.

"There was a great scream from my playing partners as they saw the ball go into the hole but once more I had failed to see it for myself.

"We were soon back to a crowded clubhouse and it proved to be an expensive celebration of my second ace."

Flixton President Bill Phillipson had a full field for his coveted President’s Prize.

And the proud winner was six-handicapper Dave Chesworth with a fine 67 seeing him clear by a shot from Steve Jepson and local cricket legend Alan Coates.

Acre Gate golfers travelled to Mollington Grange to play for the Arthur Grimshaw Memorial Trophy on the Captain’s Away Day.

Wayne Wilkinson posted a winning 34 points to finish clear of Allan Longden and Jack Faulkner over a testing course with many water hazards.

Linda Sandle of Dunham Forest Golf Club was also in celebratory mood after winning the MDLGA Bunty Booth Trophy.

The competition features the qualifiers from over 80 clubs in the MDLGA and Linda posted a fine 66 to finish ahead of Penny Baglin (Prestbury) 67 and Pauline Roper (Worsley) 68.

Sale’s men played a Midweek Stableford and GD Feely was first past the post with 37 points, one clear of AR Barker.

Ashton’s men were in singles Stableford mode and D Wilson won after a cpo on 39 points from P Trafford.

The third round of the Lawson Cup at Ashton had Bryan Young in sparkling form with a nett 64 seeing him home by a shot from S Lewis.

There was also celebration at the 19th after Wayne Carter had a hole-in-one at the 13th hole.

Mersey’s ladies played for the President’s Souvenir and it was won by J Jones from S Hobson.

Mersey’s plate team were in action against Davenport and played well despite losing out by 4.5-2.5.
