Brooklands knocked off the top

BOWLS: BROOKLANDS have been carrying all before them in a great start to the new season in the Sale and District League but they hit the wall in an excellent game at Cringlewood B with the home team emerging with a 21-chalk win.

Pickering took full advantage with a comfortable win entertaining Nursery and leapfrogged Brooklands to hit the top of the table.

The rejuvenated South West B kept in touch with the top two thanks to a nail-biting two-chalk win against Longsight.

New boys Carrington Spur are getting to grips with the standard they need to hold their own and picked up their first win of the season against a depleted Longford.

In division one Levenshulme are opening up a big gap on their nearest rivals and their latest victims of a big 76-chalk win were Chorlton who drop to the bottom of the table.

Reigning champions Cringlewood A moved into second place virtue of a close win at Roebuck and Fallowfield are level on points after winning another close contest at Crescent.

In the Goodies Manchester Premier League Chorlton’s Lloyds Hotel stay in the pole position thanks to a 9-6, 184-160 win over British Plate.

Winners for Lloyds were Lee Fletcher, 21-17, Billy Hibbert 21-19, Dave Carter 21-13, Dave Phillips 21-7, D Jackson 21-18 and Mike Geraghty 21-8.

South Manchester RBL also continued their good start to the season with a win over reigning champions Tonge by 9-6, 194-177.

Their top men were C Armitage 21-17, Tommy Johnstone 21-14, D Jenkinson 21-17, C Price 21-13, C Haynes 21-20, l Turner 21-12.

Sale Excel are also in buoyant mood and they enjoyed a thrilling win over Richmond by 8-7, 194-184.

Winners for Excel were M Walker 21-19, Roger Morgan 21-7, Noel Burrows 21-17, G Davies 21-17 and M Foster 21-17.

Budenbergs continue to struggle and their latest defeat came at Pierpoint and Bryant by 9-6 and 192-161.

Relieving the gloom for Buds were Geoff Telford 21-20, G Soller 21-14, A Cairns 21-15 and G Cookson 21-17
