Young golfer is strokes ahead

RINGWAY Golf Club’s young star was the top finisher in the Cheshire stroke-play championships played out in varying conditions over three days at a splendid Wallasey course.
Alex had shown his county class a few weeks previously by finishing as runner-up to Michael Bedford in the Cheshire match-play championships at Bramhall Park.
And after two days of heavy rain followed by high winds he went into the final day, lying in joint second place behind leader Craig Lewis of Prenton.
But two rounds of 76 saw him drop to 11th place with Lewis keeping his nerve to win the title for the first time.
The merit points earned by Alex moved him up to fifth place in the County Order of Merit with 90 points where Ashton-on-Mersey’s Kevin Kean lies in second spot on 105, 10 behind leader Ian Winstanley. Back at Ashton, their third Midweek medal was won by Junior Captain Oliver Jones with a swinging 66 seeing him home by a shot from C Brownhill.
Mersey juniors were also to the fore in a ladies’ competition for the Lady Captain’s Souvenir, which was won by junior Gemma Clews from Irene Westcott.
Flixton Golf Club juniors played the third fixture of the Manchester Junior Golf League at Blackley and they maintained their third place in the league as they finished in fifth place with their nett scorers being Jack Johnston 75, Tom Jones 76, Jonathan Green 77 and Connor Thornley 88.
Davyhulme Park juniors lie in sixth place in the league table.
Also in the Junior League, Flixton have progressed to the semi-finals of the Team KO with a 5-0 win over Blackley with Tom Jones, Danny Walsh, Matthew Bent, Jonathan Green and Jack Johnson posting the wins for Flixton.
The vibrant team ko mood was carried on by the club’s Dunham Forest team who had a fine 4.5-2.5 win over Lymm with team captain Mike Brown delighted with the victory by his side shorn of regulars due to holiday commitments.
The good work was carried on by the Flixton Men’s Foursomes team in the Alliance Superlux Trophy as they made the last 16 with an emphatic 5-2 win over Denton.
Sale’s men played for the Life Members Trophy over 36 holes with M Roden easing home with 134 from NF Gaffney 137, P Middleton 138 with Steve Price having the best gross of 146.
Captain’s Day at Sale saw the old firm of Rob Kill and Neil Wadsworth in charge joined by M Fagan and I Jones to post a winning score of 93 points from Tony Beazley and John, Mike and Roger Sallabank 91 with P Richards winning the prize for nearest the pin in two on the 18th hole.
