Dropped catches prove to be costly

13/ 6/2008

SALE'S early season momentum has faltered in recent weeks and on Saturday they slipped to a third consecutive defeat, this time at the hands of league leaders Irby.

Irby took nearly all their catches whereas Sale allowed several chances to go down which, if taken, might have closed or eliminated the 37 runs margin of defeat.

Sale made a bright start when skipper Mike Halkon snatched a wicket to a slip catch with his first ball, then J-P Lee bowled S Hurworth in his fourth. The Australian Woods and M Newman Snr continued to score at 4 and over until Rick Halkon had the opener stumped, recklessly charging down the wicket to his second ball.

Halkon had further success in his third over when he bowled Newman but the key partnership was between J Hurworth and D Newman, who added 61 in 18 overs. The 16-year-old Hurworth dominated the stand, scoring all but 11 of his 57 runs at one end, while Newman defended against Halkon at the other.

Hurworth rode his luck with several edges through the slips area and some dropped catches towards the end, but was finally trapped lbw by Halkon at 141 for 5. After a short but productive knock by Kinsey (17), the Irby innings subsided to 183 with Rick Halkon finishing with impressive figures of 5 for 31 off 16 overs.

Sale lost vital early wickets in their reply with Lee, Benzafar (on league debut) and Dan Halkon all failing. From 18 for 3 they made a spirited recovery through Dixon and Taylor but run-scoring was not easy against an accurate Irby attack from M Newman jnr, Holsgrove and Collyer. Needing 89 runs off the last 20 overs Sale could not find a match winner amongst the remaining batsmen and they never looked favourites to reach their target. Irby took some excellent close catches in the later stages and emerged close but worthy winners.
