Old-school fun for primary

ABBOTSFORD Preparatory School in Urmston went back in time for an open day with a twist last week.

The Flixton Road school celebrated its centenary with a Victorian-themed open day on Saturday, June 30.

The pupils, both current and prospective, got dressed up and spent the day experiencing lessons from 100 years ago.

Some parents and staff also joined in the fun by playing the roles of Victorian school masters and mistresses.

The day began with a drill in the playground set to the music of a Victorian street organ, and pupils then went on to take lessons in handwriting, times tables, woodwork and sewing. Teacher Pauline Fox said: "They did their English lessons using slate and chalk, or pen and ink.

"The kids had a great time, and I think the parents enjoyed it as well. People went to quite a lot of effort with their costumes - some even hired them from a fancy dress shop - and everyone looked great."

At the end of the day 100 balloons were released to celebrate 100 years of Abbotsford Preparatory School, followed by a barbecue with Victorian-themed games.

The school hopes to continue its centenary celebrations by holding a reunion for ex-pupils in September.
