A GRANDAD given just months to live has had a life-saving lung transplant.
John Williams, 62, from Sale, was diagnosed with a fatal lung disease months after he retired. He needed oxygen to breathe and couldn't leave the house for more than a few hours.
With 70 people waiting for a transplant at Wythenshawe Hospital, John did not hold out much hope.
But he was called into hospital last week and after a seven-hour operation he is now recovering in intensive care. His daughter Hayley, 35, said: "I keep having to pinch myself to believe it is really true - I thought I was going to lose him. Watching him get sicker and weaker has been so hard.
"The operation went really well and he is doing brilliantly and we can't wait until he is back to his old self again.
"We want to thank all the staff who have looked after him, but most importantly we want to thank the family of his donor. They must be going through a very difficult time right now. What they have done will change all our lives."
