Festival shines through the storms

THUNDER and showers failed to halt happy carnival goers from making their way through Altrincham on Saturday.

A sea of colourful floats made their way through the town centre despite the rain as the annual Altrincham festival day got underway.

After turning heads on the streets, they then arrived at the Beechfields Recreation Ground where the weather began to improve, the stalls opened and the displays and entertainment began.

Carnival committee chairman, Councillor Neil Taylor has hailed the event - part of Altrincham Festival - as a great success.

"Even though it was a very damp start to the day, spirits were very high," he said. "Come midday the weather began to improve, aside from a thunderstorm, and it proved a fantastic day.

"All the stallholders had set up despite the bad weather and the floats were absolutely fabulous - they had all made such an effort."

Some of the highlights of the day included music from marching band, the Breaston Highlanders, a horse riding display, a performance from the USA baton twirlers and the crowning of the rose queen and rose bud, Abigail Lloyd and Isobel Harris.

Following another successful year, added Cllr Taylor, the committee will now start planning the next one.

"The committee is desperately looking for new blood to join to make 2009 even better," he added.
