Burglaries could be linked

15/ 5/2008

THREE distraction burglaries that took place in Wythenshawe on the same day could be linked, police say.

The offences all took place between 12pm and 5pm on Tuesday, May 13. The victims were women aged 71, 61 and 86 - all three live alone and have disabilities that affect their mobility.

In each case a man started talking to the women at the door, pretending to be an old friend. Once he was invited in he asked his victims for a cup of tea, and while they were making it stole money from them. The first offence occurred at around 12pm on Austell Road, the second at 1.30pm on Ardenfield Drive, and the third at around 5pm on Lovett Walk.

In each case the offender is described as a slim white man in his late 20s to early 30s, with short brown hair, dressed in blue and riding a black bike.

Detective constable Phil Hargreaves of Wythenshawe CID said: "In each of these burglaries a vulnerable woman has been deceived, and left shaken and distressed.

"People may have seen a man matching our description approaching people's homes, and we would ask them to come to us with information. We would also like to remind people to be extra vigilant when approached by strangers at home."

Anyone with any information is asked to call Wythenshawe CID on 0161 856 4857, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
