Concern over clubbers

TEENAGERS collapsed in the gutter, staggering across residential streets and making brazen attempts to buy booze were the scenes which greeted the neighbours of a Sale nightclub on Friday night.

Teens had gathered for a youth night at Alibi but the evening quickly descended into chaos when not all could get into the club.

Police had to give first aid to one 14-year-old who was under the influence of alcohol and arrest another who had got too rowdy.

Meanwhile, the noise coming from the groups going to and from the venue was too much for those living near the Northernden Road club, according Priory Councillor Jane Baugh.

She said the ward councillors had dealt with several phonecalls from locals stating they were very concerned about the behaviour of the youths.

Cllr Baugh said: "There were hundreds of teenagers swarming across the street.

"It is a real problem because the club is so close to residential properties. It was the noise that bothered the residents the most.

"It was quite clear that the youths had been drinking.

"I have no objection to the Alibi holding an event for younger people.

"By accounts, the event inside the club was well managed and it is good that young people have somewhere to go. The problem seems to be that the capacity of the club is about 150 but far more are attracted to the event.

"The large number of youngsters who can’t get in to the club then roam the local streets."

Sale Inspector Brendan O’Brien said he was deeply disturbed by the events of Friday night.

He is keen to reassure the public that he has drawn up a plan to tackle the issue.

Insp O‘Brien said: "Last Friday, my officers had to give a 14-year-old girl first aid because of excess alcohol.

"She had collapsed on the car park opposite the club and was very drunk.

"Fortunately she recovered quickly and had a friend with her, who was able to contact her parents. A young boy was also arrested for breach of the peace and taken home, where he was de-arrested.

"Overall, we had six calls from the public about anti-social behaviour in the town centre."

He added that four teenagers were also arrested the previous Friday for public order offences.

Such incidents have led him to question the suitability of such events. He said: "Nightclubs and young people do not mix.

"From my point of view, these nightclubs should only be open to adults. The Waterside Centre holds activities for young people at night which are far more suitable.

"And I also have to ask what the parents are doing about this? They are, after all, ultimately responsible for their children."

Alibi nightclub was unavailable for comment as Metro News went to press.

From a parents point of view it's a great shame to find the club has been closed. The Alibi nightclub was a good idea, shame on the local shops for selling to drink to under the under aged. It's the off licenses that should be closed not the club, at least we knew where our kids were when it was open, i hope the moaners are happy now.
