A taste of Poland

PUPILS and parents held a special event at an Altrincham School to celebrate all things Polish.

The event took place at Blessed Thomas Holford Catholic College on Friday, May 2 and involved Polish food, drink and dancing.

Headteacher John Cornally said the idea came from the school’s Polish pupils, who organised it with help from their parents.

He said: "Some of the students came to us and said they would like to do this, and we were all for it – we thought it was a great idea.

"We have a number of Polish children in the school, and quite a few have come over the last year to 18 months. They have settled in and done really well – they have a very strong work ethic and are high achieving."

Mr Cornally said a number of the Urban Road school’s Polish pupils, who arrived with a limited grasp of English, are now studying for GCSEs and planning to take A-levels.

"We are delighted with the children who have joined our school – I cannot speak too highly of them," he said. "It has been quite uplifting to see how well they have settled in.

"Poland is a Catholic country so many Polish immigrants will look for a Catholic school, and they really want to join in and be part of our lives, which is great."

Friday’s event was aimed at giving local people without much experience of Polish culture a taste of the country’s history and lifestyle.
