Jam-busting lights plan for busy motorway
21/ 2/2008
A SCHEME hoped to ease rush hour gridlock is being introduced on the M56.
Work to install 'inteligent' traffic lights at the junction four slip road, Wythenshawe, will begin next Tuesday.
A monitor which will time the lights to match the flow of traffic will also be installed, a move hoped to prevent the 'bottlenecks' which often bring motorways to a standstill.
The system has proved successful on other motorways including the M6. The route is one of 70 that will benefit from the Highways Agency £18M scheme.
Project manager Sujad Hussain said: "Motorists joining the motorway may have a few seconds delay at the slip road lights, but there will be an overall benefit for all motorway users.
To ensure the system works effectively, it is essential that fine tuning of the control software has to be carried out in the first week of operation.
"Motorists may experience some minor delays while this work is carried out."
The majority of the work will be carried out overnight between 10pm and 5am, to reduce its impact on motorists.
