Letters
We're putting tenants first
22/12/2006
I AM writing in response to the letter "Fight these housing
plans" (Metro News, December 1).
I am not in a position to comment on the decisions of Trafford
Housing Trust or of London housing organisations. However, the
letter writer uses his criticisms of them to attack Manchester
Council's proposals to transfer its South Manchester homes to
Southway Housing Trust.
In fact, Manchester Council is putting the needs and interests of
tenants first by its proposals.
Unfortunately, the council is not able to raise the necessary funds
to improve South Manchester homes to the acceptable and modern
standard that the tenants deserve but Southway will be able to do
so.
Manchester Council will ensure Southway will not have "the property
developer mentality". The council is setting up Southway to manage
homes in South Manchester on a not-for-profit basis. Any operating
surpluses will be invested back into services for tenants.
Local tenants and councillors will form the majority of Southway's
board. Tenants will keep their security of tenure and other
important rights, and rents will remain affordable.
Housing stock transfer for other former tenants of Manchester
Council has an outstanding record of success in delivering improved
homes. South Manchester tenants deserve the same opportunity for
modern kitchens, bathrooms and double-glazing.
That's why the council recommends tenants to vote "Yes" in the
ballot.
Cllr Eddy Newman,
Executive Member for Housing,
Manchester Council
