Richard was spot-on over cigarettes
14/12/2006
RICHARD Butt's "Why I'm so sick of cigs" (Metro News, December
8) was spot-on.
Non-smokers who work in smoking pubs and nightclubs increase their
chances of acquiring serious heart and cancer problems by 25 per
cent by breathing in other people's smoke.
I am surprised Caffè Nero on Cross Street allows smoking - they
should follow the example of smoke-free Starbucks.
Caffè Nero and all other businesses in Manchester do not have to
wait until July 1, 2007. They should go smoke-free now and start
protecting the health of their workers.
Cllr Pat Karney,
NHS Director of Smoke Free
Greater Manchester
I READ the article by Richard Butt in Metro News (December
8) and couldn't agree more. Roll on July 2007! Sadly though, I
don't think it will have much effect.
Smokers are arrogant and ignorant. They will smoke wherever they
want whenever they want, regardless of those around them.
Time will tell but it was refreshing to read Richard's outspoken
views. More please!

WHAT a stupid person your columnist Richard Butt is.
He describes how he made a great fuss at Caffè Nero when he
discovered - shock horror! - that smoking is allowed there - and a
little "too loudly'', he admits, drawing looks from
offenders.
Then he goes on to describe himself as ``the silent majority''.
Doesn't strike me that he's very silent on the issue at all. First
he's spouting in a newspaper column about it and then he admits to
causing a rumpus in a café.
He also reported that he's so "militant'' about not smoking that
he's "divorced'' friends who enjoy a fag. I'm sure they were gutted
that they lost such a genuine, loyal pal. How shallow can a person
be?
Richard rounded off by saying he is looking forward to the ban next
July, when he'll be able to go to his local for the first time in
12 years. I bet they can't wait.
You truly live up to your surname, Richard, because that's what you
are indeed a pain in! May you never darken the doorstep of any
boozer I drink in.
