Bright lights but who would pay?
14/12/2006
IT was reported in Metro News (December 8) that BDP Lighting,
who have set up coloured lights under rail bridges around
Manchester for Christmas, would like to promote the use of lights
all year round to show off the city's architecture.
Manchester has, indeed, a stunning architectural heritage,
particularly dating from the Victorian era.
But the project to install lighting all year round should be
treated with caution.
It would involve considerable energy use, which would not only be a
drain on scarce energy resources but would also show up as an
increase in the council tax, as I presume the council would have to
foot the energy bill.
BDP Lighting would no doubt benefit from increased profits but I
think the council should be wary of spending council tax payers'
money and using energy in this way.
Such a project would certainly be out of step with the Climate
Change Action Plan, which has just been launched in the North
West.
