Let's celebrate diversity
14/12/2006
READERS should try this simple test to check if our attitude to
Muslims in Britain is becoming more prejudiced.
Take any recent newspaper letter calling for Muslims to integrate,
or similar, and imagine it's 1930-something. Next, substitute the
word "Jewish'' for "Muslim'' ... feeling a little queasy?
This test also works well on government ministers' recent
speeches.
We need to celebrate diversity in Britain, while doing everything
we can to bring communities together.

OF course all Muslims are terrorists. We live in a world where all
Irish belong to the IRA, all Scots wear kilts and all English wear
bowler hats, don't we?
Is it not foolish to believe in such stereotypes? Should we not
judge people individually and on their actions rather than on an
often ill-informed notion? If I met an unpleasant French person, I
wouldn't paint all the French with the same brush, just as I don't
expect someone to put me in the same bracket as a person who kills
innocent people.
I am a Muslim but that is a million miles away from the
stereotypical "Muslim" terrorist.
That goes for 99.9 per cent of the Muslim population. Why should I
be associated with someone with whom I have nothing in
common?
People who commit terrorism or any crime should be brought to
justice, whether they are Muslim or not. Should we then not focus
on these criminals who perpetrate such acts rather than stigmatise
a whole population?
I am not after sympathy. I simply want common sense and not bigotry
to prevail.
