Exam mocks choice policy
24/11/2005
AN article about the large number of pupils being bussed out of
Trafford to Knutsford because of the 11-plus (Metro News, November
4) contained quotes from the Trafford Council education director
praising the performance of her authority.
The 11-plus makes a mockery of the Government's much-vaunted choice
agenda, as stated in the recent White Paper. The secondary school
nearest to where I live is a specialist school in visual and
performing arts. It also happens to be a school whose admission is
controlled by the 11-plus. So, on average, it is not accessible to
two-thirds of the children in this locality, regardless of whether
they want to "choose" a specialist school or want to make the very
reasonable request of attending the school nearest to their home.
The 11-plus and the choice agenda are completely incompatible.
