Rescue remedy for city markets

24/11/2005

FOR such an important city, Manchester's regular city centre markets are abysmal.

Church Street has been reduced to just four stalls - three fruit and one veg - and the Arndale is a shadow of its former self.

Anyone who has been to Barcelona - or Bury for that matter - can see what can be done.

What we need is for the Church Street market to be expanded on to the surface car park and the two bottom floors of the multi-storey car park made into a covered market. Small producers as well as established traders should then be encouraged to locate there by a reasonable level of rents.
