Shamed by Mancunians

17/11/2005

I FELT quite proud of Manchester as I looked down at it from the Wheel on Saturday evening at about 11pm, but this sentiment was quickly replaced, not for the first time, by disgust and shame.

As my friend and I were walking along Market Street, we paused in front of an old man playing a tin whistle.

At almost the same moment, a tin can was kicked right into the old man's face, causing him to scramble away in terror.

We turned to see a young man (as so often too fat for his years), and he said "I love doing that! They've no right to be doing that anyway."

When I began to tell him what I thought of him, a bevy of his companions (including the usual fat young girls) began to abuse us.

So I challenged them to come and beat up two old ladies if that was the sort of people they were and they did back off.

This is an aspect of "Britishness" I presume Tony Blair would not wish to include in his criteria for would-be citizens to aspire to but you do see nastiness in this country that I have not observed anywhere else.
