Why I’m opposed to intolerable tax

21/11/2008

I WRITE as a pensioner who will not be affected by the proposed Greater Manchester congestion charge but I am opposed to this intolerable tax on the motorist.

The London congestion charge covers central London only.

The Manchester proposed charge covers a vast area that surrounds Manchester itself.

The only advice that I can give drivers is to refuse to pay this unjustified charge.

If most drivers ignore it then the scheme will collapse!

But I feel that even if most people vote NO to the proposals, the local authorities will say that the proposal has been approved.

This is because the referendum consists of a postal vote only.

We will never know how the voting went.

I feel that the transport system of Greater Manchester is already adequate. We don’t need millions spending on night time buses.

Who wants to travel at night and get beaten to a pulp by some yob!

What is needed is a drivers’ revolt to defeat this barmy scheme. In the best tradition of trade unionism – Davyhulme car owners should unite!

Pensioner, Davyhulme

Dear Postbag, I have a car and every morning I can choose to go to work by car or by public transport. I go by car, because it is cheaper than public transport. This is madness! The cost balance is crazy and needs to be redressed. The congestion charge will increase the cost of using our cars, improve public transport and in some cases reduce costs. Obviously, it will cost us car users more and this selfish point of view is all I hear. The congestion charge makes sense and will improve the quality of life for all of us. Please vote yes!
