Police on streets, not in classroom
14/11/2008
I THINK F Bell was quite right when he questioned why Trafford police officers are being sent to learn Urdu from next January. I doubt that the police are overstaffed because we never see them on our streets unless whizzing by in their cars.
The priority of our police should be crime prevention and arresting law-breakers, not learning foreign languages.
Your nameless letter writer last week says "we need to encourage this kind of learning."
Perhaps in an ideal world yes, but surely not at the expense of a reduced police presence on our streets particularly when crime figures make horrific reading?
Immigrants must learn English if they want to integrate here, our hard working police have enough to do!
