Traffic calming needed on lane

3/10/2008

RE: speeding on Carrington Lane in Sale (Trafford Metro, September 26) I have lived on the stretch of road between Manor Avenue and Hawthorn Lane for over 56 years.

Originally this road was classified as a B road and was upgraded to A status before the Carrington Spur was constructed, without improvement to the carriageway.

For many of the latter years I have made representations at area board meetings to both council officials and police representatives regarding speeding, particularly by traffic leaving the mini roundabout at Manor Avenue, and accelerating fiercely towards and beyond Hawthorne Lane.

At certain time of day this section of road resembles a race track. The official response (in writing and verbally) to representations asking for some form of speed limit reminder or control is that ‘there need to have been three deaths or serious casualties within one kilometre over a 36-month period, and there must be a trend of collisions over a period of five years – rather reminiscent of closing the stable door, etc.

This on a road with two entrances to a school and no zebra crossing or controls (other than a school crossing patrol at the beginning and end of the school day).

The road is also the main route for emergency vehicles from Sale ambulance station to Trafford General Hospital. The possibility of an overtaking ambulance meeting a speedster is very worrying.

Why can’t we have repeated 30 signs on lamp posts, at the very least, or illuminated warning 30 signs, as installed on the main Washway Road, or even possibly a speed camera near to Hawthorne Lane?

Manor Avenue has speed cameras and 30 signs, and there is at least one repeated 30 sign on Harboro Road, but nothing on Carrington Lane. I cannot believe that such simple measures would be costly in relation to the benefits resulting.
