Why don’t elderly understand bins?

RECYCLING bins do confuse the elderly, writes Harry Wild.

I read letters from Harry most weeks but I have to question his comments last week on recycling bins and the elderly.

Despite stating that there is a brochure, and that it is also printed on the bins what goes where, the elderly are confused.

Why exactly should they be confused?

Elderly doesn’t mean ‘incapable’ or ‘lacking intelligence,’ does it?

Is he saying no elderly people can read or understand simple instructions of what to put into a bin? How hard can it be?

I’m fairly certain this is not the case.

Maybe he is just using the elderly as an excuse for having too many bins he doesn’t like?

Perhaps, rather than using the elderly as an excuse or criticisng the number of bins, his normally good letters into this paper would be better placed trying to suggest solutions to the problems we have about the waste we generate.

Furthermore, the profits from re-cycling (if there are any?) aren’t about reducing council tax bills – it’s about RECYCLING!

We have a collective responsibility to reduce our waste.

If you don’t like it, understand the need and suggest an alternative.
