Big-screen chaos conspiracy theory

THE UEFA Cup Final was expected well in advance to pass off peaceably and it was pointed out that Glasgow Rangers fans generally behave well when abroad.

However, given the historic anti-Scottish feeling in our country, which can only have been resurrected by recent political discussions and media coverage, it is entirely reasonable to assume that it might have seemed tempting for some interested party to anonymously ‘flick a switch’ and sabotage the football fun, thereby challenging the Glasgow fans’ good behaviour status and whipping up anti-Scottish fervour.

Walking down Oxford Road late afternoon on the match day itself, I approached one colourfully dressed Ranger fan and asked him why the fans were drinking alcohol in the streets when it was a criminal offence to do so.

He replied politely that on such an important occasion, there had been a general relaxation of the laws on drinking.

I apologised for having challenged him, and then asked why the fans were dropping so much litter on the streets and he replied that Manchester City Council had not put enough bins out. This courteous Rangers fan then apologised, most sincerely, on behalf of all the Scottish fans present for any offence they might cause.
