So what if Hitler would agree?

16/ 5/2008

REGARDING Mr Lee’s letter (Metro 02.05.08), Mr Winchester is right to describe as "crackpots" people who advocate the practice of cutting animals’ throats whilst they are conscious.

If Hitler would have agreed with Mr Winchester, so what?

Hitler often talked nonsense but it would be silly to disagree with every opinion he expressed.

Mr Lee’s statement "Cllr Baugh is to be commended for raising the important issue of animal welfare" is fatuous.

Her party has an abysmal record on several aspects of animal welfare; in particular it has failed to object to the above cruel practice.

Of course, the Lib Dem and Conservative parties have also failed to do so.

All three parties have evaded the issue and so has Mr Lee! His letter does not state that he objects, or that he does not object to the practice.

A public consultation on whether it should be banned would serve no legitimate purpose. Grubby politicians prevaricate, whilst the cruelty continues.

Gordon Brown recently said that he would listen to people, but don’t hold your breath.

I have been objecting to this type of cruelty for over 35 years. He should get off the fence, urgently introduce a bill to ban it, and then consider related matters – for example how to prevent the import of inhumanely killed meat.

Halal meat is still being served to pupils in state schools without their knowledge, even if they believe the religious slaughter is cruel. Parents have a right to know. Muslim religious tradition, animals are prepared for halal products by having their throats slit while conscious - a method many people believe is inhumane and which the RSPCA has condemned. . Our children should have a choice.’ Abdul Dean, ethnic minorities officer for the Christian Peoples Alliance, said: ‘Christian children should be given an equal chance to have non-halal meat. The schools should explain the situation to parents at the outset. In a RSPCA pamphlet stated: ‘Muslim communities in the UK should review their slaughter practices. Research demonstrates that slaughter of any animal without stunning can cause unnecessary suffering.’
