Aquafit for over-50s should be encouraged

2/ 5/2008

I WOULD like to put the record straight regarding the 50 plus class in Stretford Leisure Centre.

It was reported on page nine of the Metro News (11.04.08) that the 50 plus aquafit class has been reduced from one hour to half and hour because of poor attendance.

The previous regular class members, fifty per cent of whom were non-swimmers, enjoyed the exercise in the heated pool.

When the aquafit teacher resigned from Stretford, it was apparent over the next year that she was not being replaced, and for the non-swimmers the class held no further interest.

As a consequence these people have drifted away in large numbers, and more recently so have the regular swimmers. People like me who try to attend as much as possible are now paying the weekly fee of £3.00 to use a facility which is no longer available – ie. the heated pool and teacher for one hour of aquafit instruction exclusively for 50 plus members, in the small pool.

I suggest we should be paying no more than the £1 fee that other 50 plus swimmers pay to use the large pool, as we are not supervised in any way, and are supplied with a life guard on duty the same as the large pool.

I think we do need to look at starting a new aquafit class for the 50 plus people of Stretford as we are all encouraged to take more exercise as we get older, and whatever kind of mobility the seniors of Stretford have it can only be enhanced by water therapy.

I also use the leisure centre at stretford, £3.00 is nothing to pay for the 50+ group, As i am not 60 i would have to pay full price or take a membership out for £25.00 , My day at the lesure starts off with using the gym (normal price £5.50) then i go to the keepfit (normal price £4.00) i then have a game of badminton (normal price £9.00) and finish off with a swim (normal price £2.80) this would cost me £21.30 if i payed for each one, the 50+ group price saves me £18.30 if i payed full price, I would like the thank the staff at the leisure centre as every time i go there they allways are great and make me feel welcome

I go to Stretford Leisure Centre to th 50+ group The £3 is NOT just for the 1/2 hour swimming in the small pool for 50+ only, It is for the FULL 50+ group morning between 9am - 1pm, You can do Badminton, Table Tennis, Squash, Aerobics, Yoga, Public Swimming, I think £3 is very good for what you get, If you only want to do one thing that is up to you, What do you want for £3
