Seniors should be applauded

2/ 5/2008

A YOUNG civil servant recently wrote to your paper (Metro 18.04.08) remonstrating against the over 60s group, who are campaigning for the restoration of the free pass to Trafford’s swimming and leisure centres for constituents who are over the age of 60.

The pass when first issued was promised for life. The young letter writer accuses the campaigners of indifference to young adults, and claims if they get what they want the young will pay more.

I would like to point out that these campaigners are of a generation that voted and campaigned to have money taken out of their pockets for their government to fund the construction of the National Health Service, set up a national pension scheme, and start unemployment pay.

They also funded the increase in the compulsory education age – the principle was, if it’s good for society it’s worth paying for.

That same principle is behind the present campaign. They are not campaigning for themselves, but for the general good. If we can encourage the elderly to exercise, we can stave off ageing and illness.

This means less demand on hospital beds, a smaller drugs bill, and less demand for carers and nursing homes. In short, the move will reduce pain and suffering for the elderly, and mean less strain and stress for their families.

It will also have the advantage of saving us all money. We should all applaud these campaigners, they display the true traditions of British democracy and of not giving the government a free ride. If society is to improve we need a lot more people like this group. I admire their drive, their determination, their principals and their values. Carry on.
