Library cuts fears

7/12/2007

THE Tories agreed a report at an Executive meeting last month (Library plan is considered, Friday, November 30) which could lead to cuts in the library service of up to £500,000, which could leave our libraries decimated.

The cuts were agreed by the Tories and the Leader of the Council, Councillor Susan Williams, refused a full debate on these proposals.

Only last year the Tories closed one library and reduced opening hours at many others. Once again, they are pushing through policies that will affect residents’ access to one of the most valued council services without full debate or consultation.

Any cuts in staffing levels will reduce efficiency and could reduce the opening hours of our libraries.

They are unique in being our local ‘cornershop universities’ where the public of all ages and backgrounds can have free access to books, computers and other information sources.

The Tories introduced charging for computers last year, which we believe was a backward step.

The staff are trained and well researched in helping and supporting the public with any book or information they need.

The Tories talk of bringing in new equipment, which is welcome, but not at the expense of losing valued library staff.
