MUSIC: The Ting Tings, Academy 2, May 18

14/ 5/2008

AFTER years of producing lots of scruffy, unkempt indie bands, it looks like Manchester is finally upping the pop glamour stakes in 2008 – and you will know them as The Ting Tings.

Anyone who saw the duo’s recent appearance on the Jonathan Ross show will understand exactly why.

Hailing from Salford, The Ting Tings already ooze the sort of pop hooks which Girls Aloud would kill for, whilst singer Katie White is primed for sexy, sassy pop pin-up status. And having won the admiration of Robert Downey Jr (the other guest on Jonathan Ross that evening), it looks like The Ting Tings are making the transition from Manchester favourites to being genuine A-list pop stars. Perfect in pop style and substance they might be, but The Ting Tings are far from manufactured pop mannequins.

The Ting Tings rose to prominence as a result of playing some now-legendary secret warehouse parties in Salford.

It’s easy to see why they make the perfect warehouse party band – as proven by new single ‘That’s Not My Name’, The Ting Tings mix the dancefloor funk of The Gossip with the insistent hooks of Girls Aloud.

And the end product is instant pop perfection which can currently be heard all over TV and radio stations.

The band’s debut album We Started Nothing (released on Monday) has been met with rave reviews and should firmly justify much of the gushing media hype. But The Ting Tings have already won their biggest accolade – they’ve put sassy pop glamour back on the Manchester music map.
