PRIEST’S mother Mrs Brenda Joy Thorpe died in Rochdale Infirmary on Monday 14 July aged 80.

Mrs Thorpe was born and brought up in the Gloucestershire town of Tewkesbury.

After the Second World War she married her husband John in Tewkesbury Abbey and they came to live in Lancashire, first in Horwich, where her husband was born, and then in Accrington.

She worked as a machinist at Higham’s cotton mill and the C D Pierce furniture factory in Accrington, and at J Slater and Sons in Great Harwood.

In her spare time she was a keen reader and enjoyed knitting clothes and watching TV.

Since the death of her husband in 2005 she had lived with her son, Father Frank Thorpe, who is the parish priest at St Anselm’s RC Church in Whitworth.

Her funeral will take place at St Anselm’s, with reception of her body on Wednesday 23 July and Requiem Mass on Thursday 24 July, followed by cremation at Accrington.

She also leaves her sisters Marion, Dorothy and Iris.
